Orcas
Santa Cruz 14 September 2002

One of five Orcas observed on the Sep 14 pelagic trip from Santa Cruz
with Shearwater Journeys. These animals had just killed a California Sea
Lion, and were still in the process of feeding on it when we arrived.
This Orca is carrying a piece of the sea lion in its mouth; the red,
bloody carcass is noticable just anterior to the mouth.
Two Orcas approach our vessel, while the engines were on idle. They
surfaced right next to the stern, carrying the carcass!! A very exciting
event for all on board.
